I'm writing my directions with certain problem patrons in mind.

This may be arts and crafts, but I mean business

I seem to always fall into this trap. I advertise for a certain age and end up having parents come and bring significantly younger children with their older siblings and insist they are allowed too. My coworkers have this issue as well, but they offer programs for older preschoolers and elementary age. I have people annoyed when I tell them, no you shouldn't expect your toddler to be allowed to do the same craft as his 12 year old sibling.

I've tried signs. I've stopped people at the door saying "Just to let you know, this project contains sharp metal objects/fire/needles/whatever; So we are only allowing older children to do it." I'm meet with looks like I am smug and crazy. Of course my little one can do it or, I'll do it for them (which is against the entire principle of making a craft program for kids)

But, I also cave and flip flop because I've recognize I work in an community where the practice of the arts is not as important as sports/farming/hunting etc. Unlike my upbringing, the only time kids in our community might get to do a craft is at school or at the library. This applies across the board. To the low income family that doesn't have the money to keep markers in the house, to the well off stay at home moms, who might have a Pinterest board full of activities but no motivation to actually do them with their kids.

Kids are coming to the library to learn new things and work with craft supplies they have never seen or even imagined. So I feel bad about denying access to these materials due to a child's age. I usually have plenty of supplies so I decide to give in and share.
Some times this has worked and been successful. A well behaved younger sibling has been able to grasp the concepts, respect the materials and not be disruptive. Last fall, I invited a group of rowdy girls who were playing tag in the stacks to come into my program and make something instead (even though they were younger than the ideal age group) They had a blast and their caregiver thanked me profusely, admitted that there isn't much opportunity in their home life to do crafts like this.

However, lighting didn't strike twice. For my December program, I had a mother burst in with two little girls and ask "Is this where me make ornaments?"
I had a bad feeling about this, but then I thought "What kind of Scrooge are you to deny kids a chance to make ornaments for their family? Its Christmas!"

Yeah in hindsight I should have been a Scrooge. I should have pointed out that we offered 4 other holiday programs that month for their age group but this program was specifically for older children. They misbehaved. They were pushy and demanded things, including the mother who went over to a group of teens and asked them to share the colored pencils, even though they were sitting at the same table. When the teens, graciously said yes, the mom took the entire box away and hoarded them just for her two kids. They also got bored and threw their stuff animals which hit me and knocked over supplies. When I address this behavior and asked them to stop, they laughed and stuck out their tongues. Oh yes, how I wish I had been a Scrooge that day....

Last week, I became over anxious that these kids would show up again to a Anti Valentines' day party and I would have put my foot down. I had my speech rehearsed and my finger nails bitten down with worry. Yes I would deny children entry to a party!
Thankfully they didn't show up and a bunch of teens had a relaxing fun time without little kids killing the vibe.

But those kids are still out there....

So I prep, worry and wait for the next program, trying to plan every possible outcome. We are going to have a few activities for Teen Tech Week including an afternoon of perler bead crafts. Hence the need for signs warning all under 6 to stay away with from the mad library tech and her hot iron. Hopefully I get a chance to man the craft table the entire afternoon and participate more.

Participation seems to be my only defense mechanism sometimes Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14660272290602264722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460275707080468575.post-88157254653475491352015-12-30T11:27:00.000-05:002015-12-30T11:27:22.246-05:00Plan it Out! I'm going to let you all have a sneak peek at my diary! (gasp)

Well it's more of a planner/ journal/sketchbook, a little black (or red) book to center my thoughts, plan out my events, brainstorm ideas and doddle.

The seed that planted this design was inspired by the work of Rachel Moani. Here is an example from her art journal that I feel in love with and decided I had to make my own!

Mine are not as pretty as hers

So for two years (going on three), I decided to make my own planner/art journal to keep track of my work projects, personal life and have a special space to doodle or write anything that pops in my head. I used Moleskin Grid Notebooks.

The planner consist of three components

1- The calendar- I spread out the month on two pages, in equal spaces, except for Sunday which is smaller just so it fits in the pages. I usually decorate it with a quote or a theme sketch that goes with that time of year. This year I've devoted a theme to each month. Usually my favorite TV shows, movies, musical or miscellaneous favorite things.

Then fill in the spaces with the permanent or regular things in your life.
-Birthdays/Holidays/Anniversary
-Vacation days (I color code the weekend I'm working)
-Reoccurring Programs or events (storytimes etc.)

Use pen or pencil what ever your choice. I have a bag full of colored pens, pencils, gel pens, markers because I'm a big kid a heart. I try to write in pen, but I always makes mistakes. It took 30 seconds into writing in the storytime themes for January 2016 before I made a mistake...in pen! Then I had to search for white-out in our library which apparently no one uses any more!

I also leave a few extra pages between the months to jot down ideas/journal thoughts that are important to that particular time. I leave even more extra pages in June and July for Summer Reading.

Sherlock Themed for March

2- The place for Lists/Goals- This is your planner, so do what you like. I usually do a doodle or an inspirational quote on the cover. I sketch out an infographic of how many books I read in the last year and make a space to list the books I'm going to read in the new year. I've listed my favorite foods, 100 favorite movies, a page of my likes and dislikes.

You can also jot out your goals. Whether it's a big list of New Years Resolutions or a month by month plan on what you want to achieve. The internet is full of ideas about this! Just google "journaling goals" to find many helpful articles on How to Reach Your Goals by Keeping a Journal
or 12 Reasons to Keep a Journal or any of the other 1,080,000 result.

Bullet Journaling, Smashbooks, Art Journaling, Scrapbooking find which one works best for you.

Stuck for ideas, turn to the internet and Pinterest. But don't worry if it's not perfect, because you are the one who is going to see it most. (But show it off if your proud of it)

Info-graph of the books I read in 2014 plus goals for 2015

3- Free Space Plan out everything else except this. Have the extra blank pages in your journal be for whatever you need them to be. A sketchbook for doodles, a place to makes plot notes about your novel, pages to write down recipes. Make a Pinterest board IRL or a vision board with a collage of all the things you like. Try zentangles. Print off coloring pages and paste them in so you have a place to color in times of stress.

Again this is your journal so make it however you like.

I'll level with you, guys. 2015 was not a good year for me, professionally (cough "mydirectorisadouchebag" cough ) I had some really rough and trying times in the work place that left me drained, depressed, angry and feeling helpless. If you read my entire journal, you would see several examples of this. I stopped writing and drawing for a while. My 2015 journal is more than half blank and I didn't bother writing or decorating anything for the December entry.

However, in my times of trial...I did have a space. One space that was my own. It was my retreat from my troubles and yes it turned into a bit of a burn book towards my co-workers at sometimes (no regrets) But I will keep it and look back on it to find a glimmer of inspiration, a favorite quote from a book I read, a funny entry to make me smile and let me know that (hopefully) this world isn't as crappy as I make it out to be.

But seriously....2015. Good riddance.

More so when I'm at work and my arm is twisted to make our department "Holly and Jolly" with little or no help from my co-workers.

My idea for a Harry Potter themed tree was nixed and was suggested that we do a
Night Before Christmas Tree and that we make craft templates so all the
staff could decorate one. (Translation: I will tasked to make them.) I've been hauling butt to get ornaments,
trees, and crafts ready for the first week of December.

However, admist this holiday hell there is something heavenly With the success of last years winter break programs, we are bringing back movies and crafts for patrons to do while the kids are off of school. Foolish, they let me pick the movies and went with our theme....Disneycember!*
I keep threatening to have my own Disney marathon during December. (54 films /31 days) My husband thinks it's doubtful but I have faith and a two year old which is a good excuse to watch Disney movies

During winter break, we will be showing a classic Disney movie with popcorn. We will also have crafts and activities based on the movie being shown.

Robin Hood- Using a template (or a blank sheet of paper) kids can create their own Wanted poster.

Also, I've ordered in plenty of "How to Draw" your favorite Disney character books in. I have a station were the kids can draw and color just like animators. (I might bring up the light board!)

Bonus- What else is big, coming out and December and happens to belong to Disney.....

Star Wars! We are having a "release party" the day after "The Force Awakens" comes out. Similar set up. Crafts and activities all day, a movie in the afternoon. I couldn't convince my boss to let us have a marathon all day. I'm only allowed to watch 1 two hour movie on the clock.

If you really want to step up your game (or are just a Disney freak like me) you can also show a short cartoon before a film. Just like back in the day. Lots of the Disney short cartoons such as Three Little Pig, Prince and the Pauper and Mickey's Christmas Carol are available on DVD.

Pictures to come soon, after the programs. But for now here is the program ideas if you are still searching for stuff to keep your young patrons entertained over the school break.

Happy Disneycember to you all!!!

*Disclaimer: Disneycember was coined by Doug Walker, the Nostalgic Critic. If you want to watch his reviews of the all the traditional Disney animated features and have a warm fuzzy feeling that brings you back to your childhood, check it out here.
Nothing like a back to back storytimes about food...right before lunchtime...

I feel like this storytime has a curse on it. Not because its bad, but because it's busy. Rewind to 4 years ago when I first did this storytime and had a craft to go with it. Wouldn't you know it, 80 people showed up to the first one and the kids and parents would not share the supplies, even though they could see the place was a mad house. So I had sad kids with no materials to make their crafts and selfish parents (I won't call the toddlers selfish, that's their nature)

But, I decided to make a craft (a different one) and present this storytime again. I had about 35 prepped hoping that would cover both morning groups.

Of course I had 60 people show up to the first one! I got wiped out and had to print off more, cut them out and prep more supplies for the next group 20 minutes later, and clean up the mess the first group has made. And it was the day my co-worker was on vacation! She certainly would have helped me with the cutting and chaos if she were there, but alas I was flying solo.

Disclaimer: You might want to forgo a craft on this storytime if you don't want to end up jinxed like me.
Welcome Song: The Wheels on the Bus

Welcome: Our Ready to Read Skill this week is Playing

Book: Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal- A story about a pea who dreads dinner every night...because he has to eat candy! Cheesiness and laughs all around.

Song: Way up High in an Apple Tree

Way up high in an apple tree
Two little apples did I see
So I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Ummmmm They were good.

Book: How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food by Jane Yolen- Another crowded pleaser.

Song: Popcorn Kernels- A scarf song that induced lots of giggles and smiles. Check out this epic playlist from the gals at jbrary.com of all types of songs to use in food-theme storytimes.

Book: Go Go Grapes by April Pulley Sayre- I told the kiddos to keep their scarves and pretend that they were cheerleaders. They could shout and wave their scarves when the book mentioned their favorite fruit. Obviously, they were really excited about this book. If only they would get this excited about real fruits and veggies! There is a companion book Rah Rah Radishes just for vegetables.

Dancing Song: Shake Your Sillies Out- with scarves (because we can)

OK, time to put the scarves away. Give ourselves a big squeeze to make us calm and sit on our bottoms for one more story

Book: Orange Pear Apple Bear by Emily Gravett- A book comprised of only 4 (5) words, so feel free to read it straight or make observations with your group.

Literacy Tip: Books like Go Go Grapes with it's many different types of fruit (lychee, durian, mangosteen etc.) are great for improving vocabulary, but simple books (Orange Pear Apple Bear) are also a good tool helping young reader gain confidence. With only 4 words to identity with pictures, young readers can quickly identify picture to words and might be able to help you read the story after only a few times through. Find a balance that works for your child.

Closing Song: The Wheels on the Bus

Craft: (If you Dare!!) I actually had a very simple craft of cupcakes printed out on colored paper. The kids decorated it with left over stickers as "sprinkles" Promoting fine motor skills? Yes! Healthy eating habits? Uh no...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14660272290602264722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460275707080468575.post-60059302847751180012015-10-22T14:46:00.001-04:002015-10-22T14:46:25.425-04:00Librarians to Dress up as for Halloween"What are you going to be Halloween?"

"Oh I guess I'll go as a librarian."

"But that's your job..."

"Shush, I know..."

I love Halloween but after planning for several programs at my library, plus trying to squeeze in family plans, and making a costume for my toddler (who insist on being a clock) in the hope she would have a meltdown at the eleventh hour and refuse to wear it for trick or treat....I just don't have the time for an elaborate cosplay.

(Or money... you know who well us library people are paid ;)

Here are some options of fictional librarians to add some spunk to your costume this year.
Maggie from NOSFA2 by Joe Hill (Art by the incredible Gabriel Rodriguez)
Since it's Halloween, I need to read a really scary book. Joe Hill's NOSFA2 did not disappoint! Nail biting, page turning close to peeing your pants in fright horror thrill ride! I was spooked after the first chapter. It's a great novel with great characters including my new favorite librarian, Maggie Leigh. Scrabble champ, occasional psychic and punk librarian. She has the coolest little office that in the corner with a fish tank that can look out onto the children's section. "It's story hour, the best hour of the day"
This is NOT a Flannel Story!

(Because it's made out of paper)

I made most of my "flannel" stories out of paper not because I'm some sort of rebel against the fabric industry, just because I like paper. It's a more versatile and easier medium to work with for me.

With Halloween coming up, I wanted to do "This is is NOT a Pumpkin" by Bob Staake. If you have read this book, you probably have found it as quirky and charming as I do.

Also if you've used this book in storytime, you'll notice it presents some challenges.
1- It's small (typical board book size)
2- It's an older book and often harder to find in libraries (Our system only had 7 copies)

I researched and googled ideas for a flannel on this story and didn't find one. So perhaps I'm the first person to do this book as a flannel and share it. Enjoy!

Jack-o'- lanterns do.

This is NOT a pumpkin.
THIS is a Jack-o'- lantern!

The trick to creating this is to make sure the back of your pumpkin matches the front of your pumpkin. Since I used laminated paper, I also made sure to place a few pieces of double stick table on each side of your pumpkin and in the corners (for the "putting in in the corner, throwing it up" etc.) If your felt is super good at sticking to your board, kudos to you! But for the rest of us...double stick tape.

The eyes, nose and mouth are removable, chiefly the mouth has to be easy to move so you can turn it upside down to frown.

May your upcoming storytimes be spooky!
Welcome: Our Ready to Read Skill this Week is Reading

Book: Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? by Nancy White Carlstrom. An oldie but a goodie!

Book: Animal Baths by Bob Banner. The last pages go through all the actions of animals covered in the book and is a good segue into a motion activity for your group. Or you can always skip it if the crowd isn't feeling it.

Flannel Board: Five Elephants in the Bathtub You can download a template for this flannel song here you make up your own
Dancing Song: Shake Your Sillies Out

Book: Small Elephants Bathtime by Tatyana Feeny- A new book just published this year. I read another one of her titles and they are pretty cute. As a small detail, I appreciated the typography in this book.

Craft: Decorate a Shoe- Just like Pete, the toddlers decorated their own white shoes in whatever color they wanted. We used markers and yes I punched the holes laced, and tied every single craft I handed out. I told the grown up that I wasn't expecting the toddlers to know how to tie their shoes at this stage in their development, but a lacing craft was good practice for them and their fine motor skills.
Somehow my theme accidentally became heavy on the elephant theme. So might use some of these books again if I want to do an elephant storytime. Back then it was a rather obscure graphic novel with maybe a dozen or so copies in our system.

What a difference a year makes! Fun Home is now an award winning Broadway musical. We have 90 copies in our system, with a hold queue and even more copies on order. The book is still making waves as students at Duke University refused to read the book on "moral reasons"

Researching about banned books is in my top ten list of things I like to do at my job. I enjoy the look of my patron's and co-worker's faces when they pass a display of banned books and exclaim "Wait? Why was this book banned?"

It's also that time of the year when library staff can be a little bit
naughty and entice patrons to read those "dirty books" full of
insensitive materials, offensive language and depressing subjects. I
feel like the shady figure lurking on a street corner, with a trench
coat concealing black market goods; hungry for eager customers.

Which leads to the inspiration for my display. That odd logo on signs across America, the neighborhood watch creep. Who always has reminded me of Phantom of the Opera.
Pirates! When I was told in my new job that I was going to eventually take over for toddler storytime, I made of list of themes I wanted to talk about.

Pirates! was the first thing on the list.

September 19 is National Talk Like a Pirate Day. And this usually happens at the start of our fall storytime schedule. The best thing about this storytime is 90% of the picture books about pirates I find enjoyable, hilarious and really entertaining. Can't say that about every theme (I'm looking at you "getting dressed" books)

Also as I was prepping for storytime and gearing up for a new season, I did something new. I actually timed how long it took me to read each book, to make sure I wasn't going too slow or too fast. I discovered that I book that I thought was short, was actually the longest read in my set and therefore should not be used as the last story after the kids had been hyped up by shaking their sillies out.

timing how long it actually takes me to read a picture book to help plan storytime...because I'm crazy? #librarylife #storytime

I also took a tip from the world of the restaurant kitchen. Make your last plate (book) as good as your first. (or in my case books) Service/Storytime can take a lot out of you, and you don't want to be close to the finish stuck with a book you really don't want to read. It will drag and you will drag. Even if you are exhausted you still have to finish strong. The last book you read should have as much enthusiasm as the first book you read. That just my way of seeing it. ( My inspiration mainly comes from an awesome read about the industry Sous Chef: 24 Hours on the Line by Michael Gibney which I highly recommend)
Welcome Song: The Wheels on the Bus

Ready to Read skill this week is Talking. We practiced out best pirate voices with "Yo, ho ho." and "Arrrr"

Book: Peg Leg Peke by Brie Spangler - Lots of wonderful literacy opportunities in this unassuming book. As the reader you have to act as the voice of the narrator and the dog. You can break the fourth wall and engage with your group to talk back to the dog or answer questions. It has great words for vocabulary development (sextant, anchor and pekingese). Plus it's just really cute and about a dog who becomes a pirate. What else do you want? This is one of my favorite storytime books that I own in my personal library. We read it so much at home, my daughter has it practically memorized.

Song: My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean

Book: Pirate Nap: A Book of Colors by Danna Smith

Song: Row Row Row Your Boat- the pirate edition!

Row, row, row your boat
Gently cross the sea
Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, Merrily
A Pirate's life for me

Swap, swap swap the deck...
Walk, walk, walk the plank...
Hoist, hoist, hoist the flag....

Book: Pi-Rat by Maxine Lee- This book is just fun and silly for little ones and grown-ups. Full of puns and lots of pirate phrases

Dancing Song: Shake Your Sillies Out

Book: I love my Pirate Papa by Laura Leuck- A good "awwww" book to end storytime. Very sweet.

Closing Song: Wheels on the Bus

Our activity was a treasure hunt. I taped red "X"s under tables and on low book shelves and placed a handful of plastic pirate coins. The kids had to find the x, and bring me back one coin in order to get a sticker. I let them keep both the coin and the sticker. This was an exercise in following directions as for my first two groups, I had many paper x handed to me instead of coins.

Enjoy me hearties!!

I had seven tables, at least 5,000 LEGO bricks and it was still madness.

I was expecting this, just maybe not on this scale. We had issues with kids not sharing, ignoring safety rules and several who had never played with LEGO at all and keep pulling on my tailcoats asking me to show them how to build something.

The kicker was a had a notoriously obnoxious patron show up half way through, remark loudly on the chaos and then had this "helpful" suggestions.

"Next time I come, I will help you organized the kids into groups of the same age and gender. That way it will work smoother. Okay, honey"

Ah my inner monologue at that point.

"These children are working together to make beautiful creations. Why do they need to be separate by gender? Is there a law that boys and girls can't play together? Did I miss something?! Ages. Sure put all the older kids together! They would win every time because they have more experience and practice. Then you'll be back whining to me at how that's not fair to the little kids. Let the kids be! They are playing fine without your interference. I've been doing this for over a year. This ain't my first trip to the rodeo. Get out of my face, please. And don't call me honey, you're only 5 years older than me!"

(Imagining Lewis Black narrating that is quite satisfying)

Instead I apologized for the chaos and explained that we had an option of a free play table for kids of any ages to use if they don't want to team build.

Thankfully that patron never showed back up at LEGO club for the rest of the summer and things got a lot more calmer. Sure I had a panic attack afterwards and lived in fear that every club meeting this summer would be like the first, but they were not. (thank god)

We had four meetings of LEGO club this year and I divided the challenges into two categories. Creative Challenges and Technical Challenges

Creative Challenges had the kids build something to a specific theme while Technical let them build what ever they wanted but it had to fit a certain criteria

Creative Challenges
Favorite Books- I selected about 20 well known books and gave each team a envelope with 5 titles that they could chose from. Each team could only pick one book and could build a scene, character or other representation from the story.

Our Winner- The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Superhero HQ- In going with our theme "Every Hero Has a Story" I asked the kids to build a superhero headquarter. They had to think about what the superheroes would use for communication, transportation and other technology. They also had to determine where it was located (A cave, underground, sky scraper or outer space.)

Impressive!

Technical Challenges
Unbreakable- This was a favorite for me. The kids can build what ever they want, but it can't break. I would go over and shake the tables, or tilt the creation and drop them. Any brick or figure that fell off, couldn't be put back on.

This one was call Vietnam Bomb Base. Historical!

Bricks Only- Again another favorite for me. Too often I had seen kids obsessed with sticking on the most mini figures, doo-dads and other assorted pieces instead of actually building something! It's seems to be the idea that the biggest and busiest creations will automatically be the winner. Not so! My experience has been the team with the best team work and clear vision always has the most votes.
For this challenge kids could build what ever they wanted, but there was to be no wheels, mini figures, clamps, food or other accessories allowed.

Again not my first time at the rodeo. For more tips about running a LEGO club and containing the creative chaos it brings, look here at this post.
Back to school means the yellow buses will soon be
cruising your streets. Even if your toddler or preschooler doesn't ride a
school bus, they still might find them fascinating! Especially if they have a
big brother or sister who does ride. On the sly side, it’s a good chance to
talk about experiences; mainly other
people’s experiences. In my small city, not many of the toddlers and
caregivers are coming to story time on a bus or have ever ridden a bus, but in
place like Washington D.C. or NYC, it very common.

Reading about buses is a good transition to talk about
going back to school with the whole family, school age and preschool alike.
Plus if you are trying to check your local library now for the typical
"back to school" books, you will most likely find them all checked
out. (Don't blame me! Blame the teachers!)

That is the mantra I must keep repeating to myself. Till then I'm going to fret about how we can better provide services to our patrons without being perceived as lazy.

Book lists.

I'll admit. I have a love/hate relationship with book lists. On the one hand I love making them. It's always fun to take on a new project and make the time at work pass by faster (It beats sitting at the desk all day, mindlessly surfing the internet, waiting for someone...anyone to ask me a question!) It gives me a chance to research on Goodreads and other book review blogs.

On the other hand, I think printing out a list and sticking it up on a slat wall is about as effective as...just waiting all day at the desk for someone to ask you a question!! It's not the ideal outreach tool for our patrons IMHO.

It also seems limited. I hate being asked "Where are books for 3rd graders?" "Where is level such and such." If some one asks for a lists of books about Greek Mythology, and I just hand them a list and tell them to go find them or look them up in the catalog; I'm not being helpful. I'd rather do Reader's Advisory with a patron over handing them a book list.

However I do realize that they serve a need. Some people are in a hurry and they are just looking for a quick suggestion. Some kids/adult will NEVER come to the desk and ask for suggestions for whatever reasons (shyness, social awkwardness, etc.).

There is no magic bullet to make our patrons suddenly check out more books and explore new topics. Most are set in their ways. They might ask you for a suggestion but most of the time it's "I'll just take a list, thank you very much"

We've had a mostly empty slat wall right by our storytime area. Another awkward space (Our library is full of them! Hence why I'm excited about the new building!) Neglected as a book display before my time and often forgotten by shelvers, it has mostly displayed Ready to Read posters.

To snazz it up, I added two displays of "helpful handouts" (not sure what else to call them) focusing on Ready to Read...without the wordy jargon. I found great resources over at Reading Rockets.
"How to Read to a Squiggly Baby (or Toddler!)"
"Finding the Right Book for Your Child"

I also created a book list based on a BuzzFeed article on 37 Books to Read To Your Kids, Based on Their Favorite TV Shows.

My goal was to make this area more appealing for parents visiting storytimes with their kids later this fall. The same day I finished this, I saw a father pick up my book list, browse the picture books and select a stack of suggested books to take home.

OMG a book list worked!

Book lists? Hate them? Love them?
Helpful tools for patrons and library staff alike? Or antiquated relics that should go the way of the card catalog?

(P.S. Reading Rockets also has a page for themed book lists if you need some inspiration)
Also this tale from the liberry

Patron: So I have a dumb question.
Me: No, nothing is a dumb question to me.
Patron: Ok so the letters on the side of the books, those are for the reading level right? Because you don't have many V's
Me:... No those letter labels stand for the author's last name...
I think my mind still hasn't registered that it's over.

We've had an awesome summer at my library with great programs, storytimes and activities. I will say the odd raining and cool weather might have played a part in driving people into the building.

We did the Collaborative Summer Reading program "Every Hero has a Story" and I created 5 toddlers storytimes for "Super Toddlers" I kept my same format, but in the summer time my group is a lot smaller and I can usually rely on my regulars, so I added a craft to every storytime.

Super Toddlers- Superheroes

I took inspiration from Literary Hoots' Ninja Storytime . Not all superheroes wear capes!

Books Read : Do Superheroes have Teddy Bears (Coyle), Ninja Ninja Never Stop (Tuell) Hoot Owl Master of Disguise (Taylor) and Hero Mom (Hardin)

For our craft, we decorated blank superheroes with markers and scrap paper. I ordered some per-made craft sticks from Oriental Trader that were really too small for toddlers. So I made up something else on card stock and let them decorate both of them.

Super Toddlers- American Heroes

Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. So when I get a chance to do a storytime about it, I go for! While it's not a great choice for a read aloud at this age group- John, Paul, George and Ben by Lane Smith is a must read at this time of year. Books about parades and summer picnics are also good choice to round out a Fourth of July storytime.

I reused a firework flannel from Chinese New Year storytime

Books Read: Yankee Doddle (Hoberman), Fourth of July Mice (Roberts) Red White and Blue (Wardlaw)

Firework painting was our craft. It was very impressive! Most of kids were very focused on creating the fireworks while only a few treated it as a finger painting craft. I created firework stampers out of pipe cleaners and let them dip them in red, blue and silver paint. You can make a fire work shaped brush out of forks, straws or q-tips. Defiantly doing this again!

Super Toddlers- Construction Heroes

Construction always seems a crowd pleaser regardless of age or gender. You should do a mud/dirt/sand sensory bin. However you can also be like me who did enough of those already this summer and make a three little pigs sensory bin out of craft sticks, red LEGO bricks, and straw.

Early literacy tip for parents: Most of these construction story often involve building something. Clues are hidden in the text so see if you and your child can guess was the "surprise" building at the end of the story. (A park, pool, roller coast etc.)

Books Read: B is for Bulldozer (Sobel) Huff and Puff (Rueda) Tip Tip Dig Dig (Garcia) Machines at Work (Barton)

Including playing with the story/sensory bin, I also let the kids doddle with white chalk on blue construction paper to create their own "blue prints"

Super Toddlers- Community Heroes

Can't forget our firefighters, mail carriers and sanitation workers! As an activity, I played Oscar the Grouch's "I love Trash" and literally scattered trash on the floor for the kids to pick up. Surprise, they love it! So I made them promise to their homes and pick up all the trash all the time.

Books Read: Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do (Heling)*, Smash! Mash! There Goes the Trash (Odanaka) Shhh! Everyone is Sleeping (Markes) This is the Firefighter (Goodwin)

Reading tips: With the book Shhh! Everyone is Sleeping- all the community helpers are sleeping in their work places. Ask you group if a librarian sleeps/lives in the library, etc. Most people do not, but some do (firefighters, the president etc.)

For our craft we made a community hero belt. Each kid got several coloring pieces of hammers, toothbrushes, police badge and brown construction paper to make a belt. I knew this was a bigger and more time consuming craft than others. I offered the craft as a take home for anyone who wanted it.

(P.S. This author has a similar formatted book about sports. Planning ahead for SRP 2016! )

Super Toddlers- Storybook Heroes

This is a general theme less storytime. I used a selection of fairy tale, nursery rhyme books as well as some classic favorites. Chose what ever books, rhymes and fingerplays that suite you!

For our craft, we made simple paper plate crowns and covered them with loads of stickers, foam pieces and stick on jewels

We like many other libraries take a break in the month of August. So now I face with the awkwardness of parents asking me why I don't have story times and activities this month. What is the most efficient way of tell them we are on break without making the staff seem like we are lazy?

It was well over a month ago I posted a recap of events
going on during our summer reading. My goal was to post one every week. Let all
laugh at my optimism and naiveté.

Seriously this has been one of the busiest summers I have
ever experienced. Busy work, maintenance, book reviews, and blogging have been
pushed aside to for answering questions, prepping for programs, and assisting
kids and co-workers. I am reminding of
my years working in retail during the holiday season. Taking the up with the downs, I’ve had plenty people angry
that all of my copies of Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants and Elephant and Piggie
books are all checked out. What do they want me to say? I work in a place were I let you borrow popular items for free. Why do you act shocked when they are gone?

I had a patron chastity me for the way I organized my program
and volunteered her services to organized the kids in the same age and gender
groups for me the next time (yeah no
thanks)

I’ve been bad cop and a snitch. Catching kids stealing craft
supplies and then ratting them out to their caregivers.

I’ve been poked in the ribs, smacked and slapped as kids
trying to get my attention and have had my butt touched way too many times. To
be fair, I probably bumped into enough people with my butt to make it even.

Plenty of internal “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to
take it anymore” moments, when scissors have been flung at me in disgust. Or
when a kid auguring with me that they didn’t know how to use a pipe cleaner to
shape something and I stood there in disbelief, flexing a pipe cleaner in their
face. “You just move it and shape it with your figures. I don’t know what else
to tell you !”

I snapped and told a group of kids "The next person who is running in the library is going to get tripped!" When I confessed this later to my library manager, she laughed instead of firing me.

My co-workers and I have experience stress and additional hardship
such as car accidents and the loss of a husband who we all considered a friend
to our library.

It’s been rough.

However….

We’ve had over 3,200 kids and teens sign up for summer
reading.

Our shelves are bare in spots because kids are actually
taking books home to read them!!

In June we 48 programs with over 3,400 in attendance. Kids
are coming into the library and participating in both our voting passives. I’m
still pleased to say at this writing Wonder Woman is still winning by a
landslide of over 70 votes.

I had teens actually show up to my program. Knowing my record so
far of almost a year of programs with more of half of them being no shows this is a big deal to me.

More importantly, Summer Reading as been a learning experience for me. (And if you aren't learning something new at work, what is the point? ) Real life lessons in what works and what doesn't. Boosts in my confidence to interact with patrons whether I'm leading them in a song or having to correct them on their inappropriate library behavior. Using critical thinking to try to solve problems before they happen and always having a back up plan for when programs go wrong or performers don't show up.

So this summer had been a ride, but I'm glad I got on it. I could have been sitting at my desk all day bored out of my mind.

(But realistically...yes I'm counting down to the days when summer reading is over...)

Our first week is kinda of slow because we have the oddity of most of our kids still being in school when summer reading starts. Yes that late! Many of the other community libraries started their programs on May 30 and we started last Saturday on June 8. The major school district in our town still had kids school till last Tuesday.

So we made some changes. We usually have a kick-off party at the beginning which 300 plus people show up and try to sign up at the time. It's a bit of a mad house. Without the party, sign up have been a lot smoother for volunteers and staff as patrons trickle in, instead of bombarding us all at once.

One thing we did kick off was our summer long passives. The kids are voting for their favorite superheroes and the teens are voting for villains. Honestly, I thought this was going to be overlooked with all the other exciting stuff going on this summer. I was wrong. I've had in 6 days over 300 votes. So not only is that kids who visit the library and hopefully sign up for our reading club, but also participate and follow directions in our passives

This was an earlier photo but I'm still please to report that Wonder Woman is still leading the votes with a substantial margin. (And no it's not just girls voting for her!)

Kids have to follow the instructions so it's a passive with an application. Votes only count if the kid writes their name and age and only votes for one superhero per ballot. They can vote every time they visit. And if they think I'm not paying attention...I empty the boxes everyday and yes I throw out any ballots that do not meet the criteria. This ain't Tammany Hall.* I run a clean election her!

I've already had one flop. Every weekend we are doing a craft and a sensory bin. I volunteered to make up some of the bins. This morning I put out one full of pom poms and pony beads for color sorting. My co-workers had a make a superhero mask station with markers, stickers....and yeah that was it. Naturally the kids saw to more exciting craft materials and quickly wanted to use them instead. Normally I wouldn't mind but I was planning to recycle those materials for craft later in the summer and would hate to have to waste money buying replacements.

I put up a sign saying "Please keep the materials in the bin, yada yada" and had to police the area when I saw massive handfuls of pom poms go wandering off.

You know people, I've already had to be bad cop enough this summer and we've just started! I'm sick of telling kids to walk not run. I've had to reprimand our teen volunteers twice. One group already got read the riot act by my co-worker. I feel like I should be speaking in my best Liam Nesson voice.

I decided I didn't want to be bad cop anymore. I just changed the materials in the sensory bin to save myself the headache

*Obscure history joke, humor me....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14660272290602264722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460275707080468575.post-86424550247385388992015-05-29T15:08:00.005-04:002015-05-29T15:08:58.184-04:00Alternate Superhero Titles Flashback
The year is 2010 and it's my first round of summer reading at my new library job. Obviously I'm stoked; eager to impress and please. I was assigned to help other staff members in their programs inducing reading books at storytimes, making crafts etc.

One of our elementary programs had me reading a book about superheroes. The title? Mighty Max by Harriet Ziefert

Great literature it is not. Timeless story, not close but really for me, it was just such an awkward book to read aloud. The plot was just empty and pointless, the ending didn't fit. It just seemed pasted together with images and words to appease superhero obsessed little kids. Pandering to them almost. The only impression it left on me was how bad it was. And how the heck was I going to read this and pretend like it was the "greatest story I've ever read."

It made me nervous. I did my best, while inwards pointing out all my imperfections in my tone, inflection and diction as I read. I got no reaction from the kids. I felt like a comic dying in front of a buzzed crowd at an open mike. All finished I closed the book and wondered for the rest of the day. "Is this what it's going to be like for the rest of the summer? For the rest of my career?"

The panic subsided when I got to take control of programs and I got to choose the books I read out loud. If I ever picked on that bombed, was boring or I only picked it because it matched my theme, I would reminded myself..."Mighty Max"

Now as cool as it would be to do branded superhero storytime all summer. (All Iron Man one week, Batman the next!) kid's library staff are painfully aware that the books based of popular characters purely commercial..at best. They can't hold a candle to the comic genius of Mo Willems or the simple and timeless stories of Eric Carle. But they do get kids to read, so they get points for trying. (I'm just glad if a kid reads period) So instead of the obvious choices of picture books with superhero themes for storytime, I have a few book suggestions for an alternate route.

Ninjas! Ninjas are heroes (or villains...) and they still have massive appeal to even little kids. Publishers finally got the hint and more and more picture book titles about ninjas are on the shelves. Nightime Ninja and Ninja Ninja Never Stop are a few of my favorite ones.

Hoot Owl Master of Disguse
This book made me laugh and I appreciated that the main character had a bit of a naughty side to him (Just like your typical toddler) It's a chance to do a dramatic reading in a cliche voices. Can't pass that opportunity up!

Superhero Bodies (No not that scene when Steve Rogers turns into a total beefcake in Captain America...but its nice to think about)
Book explaining to kids the awesome superpowers in their own bodies. Books with movement and body awareness. From Head to Toe is a great option.

Hero Mom
Books celebrating moms and dads as personal heroes are great. This one works well for kids who have a parent in the military or not. Kids can still relate. I've been on a lot of school visits the past week talking about Summer Reading. When we mention we are going to have persons from the military for a program, they got really excited.

When my work is done for today, I realized that I when I come back to work after the weekend, it will be June! The Summer Reading Club approaches. Take heed super library staffers everywhere!

P.S. Harriet Ziefert is some sort of magically writing machine who has written over several hundred children's books. My dislike of Mighty Max should not give the impression that she sub par writer because she is far from it.

This post over at ALSA blog is everything I feel about coloring pages! (Plus it comes with a comic!)

Last summer I had a family enraged that out usual coloring page table was not out. This family had just finished up attending one of my co-worker's amazing hands on programs for kids where they made a craft, did science experiments, and experience a mini planetarium show.
They bagered our teen voulteers to give their kids coloring pages. One of them actually gave the family a sheet from her own personal coloring book, which happen to a My Little Pony. This only pissed them off further because they had a girl and a boy and they demanded a coloring sheet for the boy as well.

I stepped in before they could harass the volunteers any further and explained we don't have the space for a coloring table in our small department because we have to make room for more activity spaces for our programs. I would be happy to find them some crayons and blank paper if they wanted to stay and draw. No they wanted to take them home. They felt entitled to have as many coloring sheets as they wanted. They left stating that the "downtown library has them and we'll just go there". I was left their fuming and tempting to shout out after them "Promise?!"

I have been interrupted by patrons tossing coloring pages at me saying there are no more copies of a certain one and, oh they need 4 of them for each of the grand-kids. I have people complain that I don't have worksheets or other coloring pages. I know the public library is suppose to offer our patrons as much as we can in way of services, but this feeling that they are entitled to free coloring book (not just a page but a whole stack of them) is ridiculous. Plus we print out enough coloring sheets to kill a small forest. It's soooo wasteful.

Kids need to draw. This is the one opportunity in their life were they get to create and be imaginative. Unless they enter into the creative field as a teenager or adult, most of them will never get that chance again. They probably won't pick up a crayon until they are old enough to have kids themselves, if they have kids. Just imagine someone taking your crayons away in the 5th grade and saying " You're too big for crayons. Maybe you'll have a chance to use these again when you 30...maybe..."

I've been doing some art for summer reading and I experience co-workers looking over my shoulders and exclaimed "I'm so jealous. You are so talented. I wish I could draw like that." This puts me in a odd spot because I'm rather humble when it comes to my art (Really I'm my own worst critic) I thank them for their compliments but also point out. "I've been practicing. Don't feel bad about yourselves because we do different types of work. I'm no prodigy!"

I'm also of the optimistic mind that if you can write the alphabet; which is really a series of lines, curves and circles, you can teach yourself to draw! But most adults don't or they feel so bad about their experience with art as a child, that they have no drive to create later in life. My mother made time to sketch and try to take art classes but my father firmly stated that he was bad at art as a kid and his teachers let him know it! I can sympathized with any adult who has taken the time to try and start a new hobby or practice only to be face with the horror that your first attempts "looks like a kid made it." They struggle and give up easily. Art is a cruel mistress.

Kids don't have that stigma (or shouldn't have it). Everyone draw or paints in their class. Everyone is on the same level. Everyone is having fun. As a student of the arts, I believe that assigning a grade to art project is a horrible idea! If you see the student as put in their best effort according to their present abilities, give them an A for crying out loud! Offer encouragement, advice and critic when necessary.

(Sorry this was a rant about coloring pages, but it turned into a jab my old art teachers...)

I do like coloring pages. I think the ones over at Dover Publications are excellent. Coloring pages are fun. I get that. But I also work in a library. To have some unwritten rule that I have to provide coloring page just grinds my gears, especially when you are surrounded by a treasure trove of imagination that I humbly refer to as the fiction section. My ire is not directed at the regulars who come grab a coloring sheet to take home with their stacks of books, or give one to their child to calm or distract them while they read. No, it for the people who take handfuls at a time. Who demanded I stop everything and make copies for them. For the people who are greedy. For the patrons who whine about broken crayons. (I'm not a store! Funding people!) For the grandmother who scolded her young grandson that he has to learn to color things more "realistically". The kid in question was 4 years old!

So when the coloring table leaves our department to make room for chess boards, sensory bins and all the wonderful crafts and activities our staff has planned for summer, I will not miss it. We are a library, we caterer to experiences. We are more than just a building that houses a bunch of paper.

Color outside the lines people!
May 8 was the official surrender of the German forces after signing the act of military surrender in Berlin. Many countries in Europe and Asia have commemorative holidays know as Liberation Day, V-E Day or in Russia (and countries of the former Soviet Union) May 9 is celebrated as Victory Day (which is apparently a big deal over there)

In the United States this holiday is often over looked until yesterday when a landmark anniversary was celebrated. This is understandable considering the US Military was still engaged in a campaign against Japan and would not celebrate their surrender until months later.

While discussing this events yesterday with my husband, I had to reflect on my own short time in history. In 1995, at the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II my parents gave me a book for Christmas. V is for Victory: American Remembers World War II.
It was one of my favorite books and as I reflect on it now, probably the book that really sparked my interest in history. How I would love a chance to read it again....

But then I snapped back to reality! It's the 70th anniversary and that was back during the 50th anniversary. This book is now 20 years old! It's probably withdrawn from library shelves. How did I get so old?

Thankfully, some libraries in our system did have copies without me having to do an ILL for it. Sure there are plenty of new books on the shelves about World War II, but I think I'll prefer to re-visit this book instead;)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14660272290602264722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460275707080468575.post-67965879145549113972015-05-05T14:56:00.001-04:002015-05-05T14:56:28.547-04:00Storytime from the Liberry: The Letter M

Display passives include:
Make your own comics, with blank comic strip pages
All About the Games: A Hunger Games Display (This came from CSLP maunnel) Check out the recently released posters The Heroes of Panem
Literary Heroes- A display about Classic literature
And this most excellent Adventure Time Scavenger hunt found at Bryce Don't Play!

If you have a suggestions for favorite villains, leave them in the comments! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14660272290602264722noreply@blogger.com0
